Reports: Actor Gary Coleman jailed in Utah
SANTAQUIN, Utah – Actor Gary Coleman has been booked into a Utah jail after police received reports of a civil disturbance at his Santaquin home, according to news reports.
Utah County Jail records show the 41-year-old former “Diff’rent Strokes” actor was booked Sunday on suspicion of domestic assault, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.
But the paper said the Santaquin police wrote in a press statement that Coleman was arrested on a warrant alleging he failed to appear in court in a previous case.
KSL-TV says that as of Sunday night Coleman’s $1,725 bail had not been posted.
The Santaquin police and the county sheriff’s office did not immediately return calls from The Associated Press.
The actor was arrested in Utah in 2008 after a man claimed Coleman tried to run over him in a parking lot when he tried to take a picture with the child star. The case was reportedly been settled out of court.
Avatar” replaces “Titanic” in record books
LOS ANGELES – “Titanic” just hit an iceberg named “Avatar.”
James Cameron’s sci-fi spectacular replaced his maritime melodrama as the biggest international release of all time during the weekend and is on the verge of claiming its worldwide crown, which also includes North American receipts, distributor 20th Century Fox said Sunday.
The News Corp-owned studio said “Avatar” has sold $1.841 billion worth of tickets worldwide during its unbroken six-week reign, and was a day or so away from surpassing the seemingly insurmountable $1.843 billion racked up by “Titanic” in 1997-1998.
The international portion stands at $1.288 billion, eclipsing the $1.242 billion haul of “Titanic.”
In North America, “Avatar” may have to wait up to two weeks to sink the $601 million total of “Titanic,” Fox said. Moviegoers in the United States and Canada have chipped in $552.8 million, enough to replace 2008’s “The Dark Knight” ($533 million) as the second-biggest movie of all time.
Data are not adjusted for inflation, and “Avatar” ticket sales got an additional boost from premium pricing for 3-D screenings. Imax Corp said its big-screen engagements have sold a record $134 million worth of tickets worldwide.
The biggest movie of all time in North America — adjusted for inflation — is 1939’s “Gone with the Wind,” with sales of almost $1.5 billion, according to tracking firm Box Office Mojo. “Avatar” ranks No. 26 by that measure.
“AVATAR” RULES IN FRANCE, CHINA
During the latest weekend, “Avatar” earned $36 million in North America and $107 million from 111 international markets, far outpacing other offerings.
It led the field in at least 29 foreign markets, including France ($123 million to date), China ($102 million), Germany ($96 million), Russia ($95 million) and Britain ($93 million).
In North America, “Avatar” was trailed by the new supernatural action thriller “Legion” at No. 2 with $18.2 million, while the Denzel Washington drama “The Book of Eli” slipped to No. 3 with $17 million in its second weekend.
“Legion,” released by Sony Corp’s Screen Gems budget label, cost about $25 million to make, and played primarily to men, the studio said. Paul Bettany, Lucas Black and Tyrese Gibson star in the tale of an of-the-way diner that becomes the unlikely battleground for the survival of the human race.
“Eli,” a similarly themed apocalyptic drama released by Time Warner Inc’s Warner Bros. Pictures on behalf of independent producer Alcon Entertainment, has earned $62 million after 10 days.
Two other films opened in the top-10: Fox’s Dwayne Johnson family film “The Tooth Fairy” at No. 4 with a promising $14.5 million, and the Harrison Ford medical drama “Extraordinary Measures” at No. 7 with a disappointing $7 million.
“Extraordinary Measures” is the debut release of CBS Corp’s CBS Films, which said its fact-based storyline about a father trying to save the lives of his children made it a tough sell. Older audiences in the Midwest and mountain areas were the primary demographic, the studio said.
Fox said “Tooth Fairy” played well across the board, despite or because of its depiction of former wrestler Johnson, a.k.a. “The Rock” in a tutu and wings.
“It’s a very sweet, wonderful message movie,” said Chris Aronson, Fox’s senior vice-president of domestic distribution.
Hope for Haiti Now” telethon raises $57 million
LOS ANGELES – The “Hope for Haiti Now” telethon, led by George Clooney and Haiti-born rapper Wyclef Jean, has raised more than $57 million for relief to the earthquake-ravaged country, organizers said on Saturday.
They called the $57 million a record for public donations in a disaster relief telethon, and said the figures were still “preliminary” as they exclude donations by corporations and large private donors and sales figures on website iTunes.
Organizers said the “Hope for Haiti Now” album was the biggest one-day album pre-order in iTunes history and was currently No. 1 on iTunes’ album chart in 18 countries.
The two-hour telethon featured more than 100 celebrities singing songs, telling tales of loss and survival in Haiti and taking donations by phone. It was broadcast on television networks around the world, online and on mobile carriers.
Singer Alicia Keys kicked off the benefit singing “Prelude to a Kiss.” U.S. rapper Jay-Z debuted a song with U2’s Bono and The Edge, and R&B artist Beyonce sang her “Halo” with Coldplay’s Chris Martin on piano.
Actors including Leonardo DiCaprio, Denzel Washington and Nicole Kidman told stories of Haitians who had survived and heroic tales of rescue efforts.
Proceeds will be split among relief organizations including the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund, the U.N. World Food Program, Oxfam America, the Red Cross, UNICEF and Yele Haiti Foundation.
The January 12, magnitude-7 quake killed up to 200,000 people, Haitian authorities said, and left up to 3 million people hurt or homeless and clamoring for medical assistance, food and water in the Western Hemisphere’s poorest country.
Xinjiang edge off Guangdong for top place
BEIJING – Two fatal turnovers cost Guangdong Hongyuan a home match and the top place of the league as the defending champions lost to Xinjiang Guanghui 96-93 Sunday of the Chinese Basketball Association league (CBA).
The loss was the first for Guangdong of the season as they posted 11 wins and one loss for the second place while Xinjiang, which had the identical record, occupied the No. 1 placing for the first time.
Su Wei’s open lay-up hit the outer bank of the basket and the substitute center knocked the rebound out of the line when the home team trailed 94-93 with 15.5 seconds left.
Guangdong were awarded another chance of victory when Xinjiang’s center Menk Bateer threw the ball wide on the following possession. Su failed to connect a pass inside the key and the ball was scrambled off the line again by Guangdong’s players.
Myron Allen put Xinjiang ahead for good with a long-ranged hand-on-face 3-pointer with 35.5 seconds to go on 94-93 to give Xinjiang the biggest victory of the season.
Charles Gains had 27 points and 13 rebounds for Xinjiang while Zhu Fangyu, last-season’s MVP, had 32 points and eight rebounds for Guangdong.
Guangdong took an early lead in the opening quarter as they led 28-18 and held the margin until the break.
Guanghui hung on in the third quarter to put the game 73-72 ahead before they gave a beating to the five-time champions, which defeated them 3-1 in the finals of last season.
In Sunday’s other matches, Zhejiang Guangsha beat Shannxi Kylin 118-98, Zhejiang Chouzhou defeated Tianjin Ronggang 104-86, Liaoning Panpan overwhelmed Dongguan Marco Polo 131-112, Fujian SBS trounced Bayi Fubang 117-100, Shandong Gold crushed Jilin Northeast Tigers 102-84, Jiangsu Dragons thrashed Qingdao Doubles Stars 95-79 and Shanghai Sharks slashed down Shanxi Zhongyu 125-101.
Coach hails Messi for joining 100 club
Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola heaped glowing praise on Lionel Messi after the Argentina superstar became the youngest player to reach a century of goals for the Catalan club.
Messi, who walked off with both the FIFA World Player of the Year and Ballon d’Or crowns in 2009, reached the milestone with his side’s third goal in the 4-0 defeat of Sevilla.
The 22-year-old also netted Barca’s fourth to take his league tally to 12 for the season and help his side move five points clear of second-placed Real Madrid at the top of the La Liga standings.
The result also allowed Barca to avenge their Copa del Rey exit at the hands of Sevilla in midweek.
When asked about Messi following the match, Guardiola said: “I congratulate him. It’s outrageous to have done what he has at his age. It only depends on him to break all possible records. He has some very, very high numbers.
“What we like most is that his ambition has no limit. I feel that he wants more. He is a wonderful example to the future generations.”
Messi, who was playing in his 188th match for Barca, was delighted with the victory which ensures the reigning champions will finish the first half of the season in top spot.
However, he also warned against getting too carried away.
“It was a very tough game but we showed the good football that we produced in the previous game (a 1-0 win over Sevilla on Wednesday) and this confidence in our game helped us beat a very hard-working opponent. We stayed faithful to our style of play,” Messi said in AS.
“It’s important to be winter champions but what we want is to get to the end of the season in the same position. We cannot be over-confident because there is still a lot of the season left and I’m sure Madrid will fight until the end.”
Federer and Co. stage fundraiser for Haiti victims
MELBOURNE, Australia – Roger Federer played the role of master of ceremonies. Andy Roddick doubled as a standup comic. Serena Williams was laughing all the way.
The fundraiser for earthquake victims on Sunday – a brainchild of Federer and dubbed “Hit for Haiti” – came on the eve of the Australian Open and raised more than $185,000, an amount that organizers expected would increase.
Federer, who has a record 15 Grand Slam titles, teamed with Williams, the reigning Australian Open champion, and Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt and Samantha Stosur. Their opponents were 2009 winner Rafael Nadal, 2008 winner Novak Djokovic, Roddick and U.S. Open champion Kim Clijsters.
The players wore microphones on the court, adding to the entertainment of a mixed-doubles match featuring player substitutions. They provided commentary as they lunged, lobbed and smashed.
There was the eloquent and debonair Federer, the MC for the match he conceived and helped organize a day earlier. There was the good-natured Clijsters cracking jokes, the playful Nadal with his sideways grin and the wisecracking Roddick.
To the delight of the crowd, Roddick mocked Williams’ infamous meltdown at the U.S. Open, when a line judge called her for a foot fault during a crucial point in her semifinal loss to Clijsters.
“Did you really call a foot fault on me in a charity match?” Roddick reprimanded a line judge. “You realize Serena’s over there, right?”
The camera panned to Williams sitting on the sidelines shaking her head and laughing, as the packed 15,000-seat stadium roared in laughter. Williams has been touchy on that subject since her arrival in Australia last week – the profanity-laced, finger-pointing tirade cost her a record fine of $82,500.
Federer tried three times to show off the shot from his U.S. Open victory against Djokovic that he has described as the greatest of his life: a between-the-legs, back-to-the-net winner from the baseline. On Sunday, it worked once and hit the net twice.
Djokovic displayed his powerful serve, acing Williams on one point and prompting her to comment: “You look really good acing girls.”
Later, Nadal smashed a winner at Williams’ feet, evoking a piercing shriek from the No. 1 women’s player.
“Don’t scare me like that Rafa,” she said, drawing support from teammate Federer who assured her, “I’ll get him back.”
At one game break, Clijsters massaged Nadal’s sore thigh. She did not interact with ex-fiance Hewitt – both are now married with children.
In the end, Federer’s so-called Red Team beat the rival Blue Team 7-6 in their one-set match that lasted an hour and a half. The teams were named for the colors of Haiti’s flag.
“It was a fun afternoon for all of us. But most important is that we can help Haiti,” Federer told the center court crowd after the match.
Some players made separate contributions, organizers said, including 2008 Australian Open winner Maria Sharapova ($10,000), American John Isner ($5,000) – after he won the Auckland tournament and Marcos Baghadits ($5,000) after he won in Sydney.
Seats cost about $9.25 – a fraction of the normal price for a Grand Slam match and fans lined up from early morning, waiting hours to get tickets for the afternoon exhibition.
“It was electric in there,” said Melbourne resident Helen Forrest. “This was just really fun and a really good way to see the other side of the players.”
Zaggy Dean, a real estate photographer from Melbourne, called it a worthy cause.
“I’m devastated about this tragedy. It’s one of the poorest countries in the world,” he said. “This was a great opportunity.”
Clijsters sets up Henin final in Brisbane
SYDNEY: Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters steamrolled their semi-final opponents on Friday to set up a tantalising all-Belgian final at the Brisbane International.
Henin, playing her first tournament in 20 months after coming out of retirement, crushed Serbia’s Ana Ivanovic 6-3 6-2 in a little over then hour.
Then Clijsters, who won last year’s US Open after making her own fairytale comeback, demolished Germany’s Andrea Petkovic 6-4 6-2 in an ominous sign of her intentions for this month’s Australian Open.
The former Fed Cup team mates have already played other 22 times before, with Henin holding a 12-10 advantage, but Saturday’s final will be their first clash since the 2006 Wimbledon semi-finals.
“It is always special to play Kim,” Henin told reporters.
“It is always going to be a good match, a challenge, a tough match.”
Henin surprised even herself as she defeated Ivanovic in a surprisingly lop-sided match on the Pat Rafter centre court.
Playing her fourth match in five days, the super-fit Henin showed no signs of weariness as she provided a glimpse of the form that saw her win seven grand slam titles.
“I didn’t know what to expect with ups and downs this week,” she said.
“I need a few more months to really be at my top. I have to remember it’s my first tournament back.”
Clijsters looked to be in for a tough afternoon after she was locked at 4-4 with Petkovic in the opening set but reeled off the next six games to seize control of the match.
In the men’s event, Czech Tomas Berdych edged past Brazil’s Thomaz Bellucci 7-6 2-6 7-6 to join defending champion Radek Stepanek and Gael Monfils in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Top seed Andy Roddick plays Frenchman Richard Gasquet in Friday’s last quarter-final.
